Young alcoholic men are just as prone to brittle bones as menopausal women. Alcohol has a toxic effect on bone-forming cells, leading to bone thinning. Young women, however, did not manifest the same risk as their male counterparts in the study, probably due to women’s relatively high estrogen levels during their reproductive years that protect their bone mass. One of the study suggested that bone mass and metabolism screening should be done in both postmenopausal women and young alcohol men.
